How to Get Your OpenAI API Key

To use OpenAI models like GPT-x in Family AI Zone, you need an OpenAI API key. This is different from a ChatGPT subscription — it's a direct connection to OpenAI's API that lets Family AI Zone call models on your behalf.

This guide walks you through the entire process in under 10 minutes.

What Is an API Key?

An API key is like a password that identifies your OpenAI account when making requests. Family AI Zone uses it to:

• Send your family's chat messages to OpenAI
• Request image generation from GPT-Image family of models
• Track costs against your account

Security note: Your API key is stored securely on the server and never exposed in the browser. Only the Family AI Zone backend (running on your server) has access to it.

Step 1: Create an OpenAI Account

1. Go to platform.openai.com
2. Enter your email and create a password, or sign in with Google/Microsoft
3. Verify your email address

Step 2: Add a Payment Method

OpenAI's API is pay-per-use — you only pay for what you use, and rates are very low for family use. You must add a payment method before generating a key.

1. Click your profile icon (top right) → Billing
2. Click Add payment method
3. Enter your credit or debit card

Expected cost for typical family use:

• GPT-5.4 nano: $0.20 input / $1.25 output per 1M tokens
• GPT Image 1.5: ~$0.04 per image
• A family of 4 chatting daily: roughly $5–$15/month

We recommend setting a Usage Limit in OpenAI's billing settings as a safety net — separate from Family AI Zone's own budget controls.

Important: For most families, budget models are enough for daily usage. You could use cheaper, capable options like gpt-4o-mini for children, homework, and routine prompts.

Step 3: Generate Your API Key

1. Go to platform.openai.com/api-keys
2. Click + Create new secret key
3. Give it a name like Family AI Zone
4. Select All permissions (or limit to what you need)
5. Click Create secret key

OpenAI only shows this key once. Copy it immediately and store it somewhere safe (like a password manager). If you lose it, you'll need to create a new one.

Step 4: Add the Key to Family AI Zone

1. Log in to Family AI Zone as the Owner
2. Click Admin Dashboard
3. Go to the Providers tab
4. Click Add Provider
5. Select OpenAI from the dropdown
6. Paste your key into the API Key field
7. Click Test Connection

You should see:

8. Click Save

Your family can now use GPT-5.4 nano, GPT-5.4 mini, GPT Image 1.5, and other OpenAI models.

"Invalid API key" error
